New Amazon Alexa Features: December 2020

Amazon development engineers are always working hard to bring new updates to your Alexa powered devices. In this post, we are bringing the new Amazon Alexa features done by December of 2020.

“Alexa, tell me when…”

Every day, we tend to use Alexa to stay organized and keep track of our busy lives. One of the many benefits of voice is that it makes it easy for us to add tasks to our to-do lists, call a friend or relative, or set reminders for important things we don’t want to forget. Alexa has delivered hundreds of millions of reminders in 2020.

We’re now building on this by announcing a new set of dynamic, event-based reminders that enable Alexa to proactively notify customers when things they care about happen.

U.S. customers can now simply say, “Alexa, tell me when…” followed by an event they may not know the occurrence of, such as a sports team playing its next game, a TV show airing, an upcoming holiday, or an email received from an important contact. Then Alexa will deliver a reminder when the requested event happens. Here are examples customers can try:

  • – “Alexa, tell me when the Super Bowl is”
  • – “Alexa, tell me when Family Guy is on TV”
  • – “Alexa, tell me when it’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day”
  • – “Alexa, tell me when James sends me an email”

New ways to stay connected with friends & family

This past month Alexa development team has launched a series of new U.S. calling features to help friends and families stay connected. New calling features include Group Calling, Zoom and Amazon Chime on Echo Show 8, Call Captioning, and Kids Calling on Fire Tablets.

“Alexa, delete everything I’ve said”

Instead of going into the Alexa app or to the Alexa Privacy Settings page online to manage recordings, now it is possible to delete all saved voice recordings by simply asking Alexa. You can just say, “Alexa, delete everything I’ve said,” and Alexa will delete all voice recordings associated with your account.

Automatically delete Alexa smart home history older than 3 or 18 months

Now, it’s even easier for customers in the U.S. with the option to enable the auto-delete feature for information older than 3 or 18 months. Choosing this new setting will automatically delete the status and usage information associated with an Alexa account for third-party smart home devices when older than 3 or 18 months.

Customers can visit the Alexa app or the Alexa Privacy Settings page online to choose the setting that’s right for them. After a customer selects a setting, they will no longer have to log in to the Alexa Privacy Settings page or the Alexa app to manually delete their activity.

“Alexa, translate Spanish”

Alexa can now assist with conversations between individuals who speak two different languages. To initiate the Live Translation feature on an Echo device, customers can ask Alexa to translate between English and French, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese (Brazilian), German, or Italian. On Echo Show devices, customers will also see the text of the translated conversation. This feature can help customers practice speaking and learning phrases in new languages, communicate between friends and family that speak a different language, and for hotel guests and staff to communicate with Alexa for Hospitality.

Five ways to use Alexa to support at-home learning for students with special needs

With more and more students learning from home due to the pandemic, Alexa can help provide some much-needed support for both parents and educators. This infographic demonstrates how Alexa Blueprints and Routines can help students – including those with special needs – better manage their daily schedules and learn new skills while at home.

7. Send My Shopping List

Customers in the U.S. can now seamlessly share their shopping needs with their contacts via the Alexa app or compatible Echo devices. By simply saying, “Alexa, send my shopping list to _” Alexa will identify the contact and confirm that it’s the correct match for sharing. She will then send a message directly to the receiver’s Alexa account with the Shopping List.

With more customers staying home due to the pandemic, this feature is particularly useful for those who may be taking care of loved ones who are unable to make it to the grocery store themselves. It’s also helpful for customers who may have disabilities, such as being visually or motor impaired and in need of more flexibility to help create and share their shopping needs with others.

Netflix on Echo Show

Now, Echo Show customers have access to the full Netflix catalog using their voice. Customers can easily search, browse, and stream movies or TV shows by just asking Alexa. To get started say “Alexa, show me comedy movies on Netflix” to find something to watch or “Alexa, watch ‘The Crown’ on Netflix.”

“Alexa, open video home”

Now, Echo Show customers have access to the full Netflix catalog using their voice. Customers can easily search, browse, and stream movies or TV shows by just asking Alexa. To get started say “Alexa, show me comedy movies on Netflix” to find something to watch or “Alexa, watch ‘The Crown’ on Netflix.”

“Alexa, play NBA highlights”

Back again for the 2020-21 NBA season, customers can watch NBA video highlights on their Echo Show devices by asking Alexa to play their favorite team’s highlights. Just say “Alexa, play NBA highlights.” Customers can also keep up with scores, stats, and schedule information by asking “Alexa, when do the Warriors play next” or “Alexa, what’s the score of the Celtic’s game?”

Amazon Music customers asking Alexa to play holiday music

In 2020, Amazon Music customers around the world had a big appetite for festive hits, and holiday listening started earlier than ever before. In fact, Amazon Music listeners played seasonal music around the clock, asking Alexa to play holiday music every minute of every day since October 1st.

Alexa, open PAC-MAN”

The new PAC-MAN Waka Waka game is now available exclusively for Alexa on Echo Show devices. Customers can talk to PAC-MAN in his own language to control his movements, and help him chomp his way through spectacular mazes, escape ghosts, and eat delicious fruit along the way. The PAC-MAN Waka Waka game uses the Web API for Games, which enables developers to deliver voice-forward games and build rich animations and dynamic audio experiences with background tracks, loops, and effects.
